Westrow – the leading salon group in the North of England – was celebrating in style on Monday 28 May 2012 after its talented hair team from Westrow West Park scooped the top spot at the prestigious and time-honoured 57th annual L’Oréal Colour Trophy Grand Final Award.

Held at the prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London, Matthew Sutcliffe and Lauren Elliott from Westrow West Park celebrated their national triumph during the hairdressing industry’s longest running awards ceremony – a fitting ending to the duo’s epic five-month journey.

The emotional finale at the spectacular event was attended by more than 1,000 of the hairdressing industry’s most prolific and accomplished figureheads, including Richard Ward, Trevor Sorbie MBE and Charles Worthington MBE. The Westrow West Park team will now launch their new prestigious title into an exciting expedition of a ‘Year of Dreams’ – a prize created to push their own personal business and creative boundaries.

The Westrow West Park dream team was presented with the prestigious trophy in an unforgettable moment by charismatic celebrity presenter Rick Edwards of Channel 4 fame and Managing Director of L’Oreal Professionnel Products Division, Vincent Mercier.

The award-winning overall model look created by Matthew Sutcliffe and Lauren Elliott from Westrow West Park stood out amongst the 28 other competitors and captured the attention of the judging panel through their flawless merge of immaculate hair colour and beautiful finish, alongside editorially-inspired make-up and stunning catwalk-inspired styling. Each element worked perfectly together and reflected their awareness of key current fashion trends.

“I worked backstage at Ashish at this season’s London Fashion Week, which gave me a great insight into current trends in both fashion and hair,” said Matthew Sutcliffe on the night. “At Ashish it was all about luxurious, metallic materials with a lot of texture in the clothes. As the L’Oreal Colour Trophy is ‘Hair Inspired by Fashion’, we took inspiration from this, as well as the Gucci A/W12 show, fusing our favourite designers to create a fashion-forward style. When it came to the hair we wanted to work in harmony with the clothes. We used a seamless smudging technique for the colour, blending lilac into lavender at the end, using a mink-blonde tone throughout. Our look was classic, clean, fashion forward and luxurious – something we always strive for at Westow.

Speaking of their triumphant award win, Westrow co-director, Steve Rowbottom, said: “Winning at this year’s L’Oreal Colour Trophy was such an amazing accolade for the Westrow West Park team. They have channeled so much thought and creativity into perfecting and achieving a look that they felt truly embodied the ‘Hair inspired by Fashion’ brief as well as excelling in the disciplines inherent within the Westrow brand. We are proud that they have been able to fly the flag for Westrow during the brand’s 25th anniversary year at such a prestigious and respected industry event.”

Westrow West Park climbed their way to the top through a challenging three-stage process that began back in February 2012 when they entered their ‘Hair Inspired by Fashion’ model look – one of more than 900 photographic entries from across the country. Their stunning model image won them a place at the North Eastern regional final where they produced a live model look alongside 35 other entrants from the region, including six other Westrow teams. Their model took to the runway in front of a panel of acclaimed hairdressers, scooping them first place on the night and securing them a coveted place at the Grand Final – one of only 28 teams chosen from 455 salons to do so.

At the Grand Final it was a tense day of live hairdressing inside the L’Oréal Professionnel Academy, London as Westrow West Park recreated their model look in just 2 hours 30 minutes and waited as eight of the industry’s most acclaimed figures meticulously judged each of the models. This highly respected panel of judges included; Jason Miller, Jo Hansford MBE, Errol Douglas MBE, Andrew Barton, Richard Ward, Charles Worthington MBE, and David Lambert.

Westrow West Park will now enjoy a once in a lifetime prize of a ‘A Year of Dreams’, which consists of a bespoke calendar of opportunities created to ensure that the winners get the most from their successful year. An exciting mix of educational courses, national media exposure and glamorous fashion shoots all await. Westrow can’t wait!
