Westrow WestPark takes home the prestigious L'Oreal Colour Trophy 2012

WESTROW WEST PARK TAKES HOME THE PRESTIGIOUS L’ORÉAL COLOUR TROPHY 2012
L'Oréal Colour Trophy 2012 Winners. Westrow, Westpark, Leeds

Westrow – the leading salon group in the North of England – was celebrating in style on Monday 28 May 2012 after its talented hair team from Westrow West Park scooped the top spot at the prestigious and time-honoured 57th annual L’Oréal Colour Trophy Grand Final Award.

Held at the prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London, Matthew Sutcliffe and Lauren Elliott from Westrow West Park celebrated their national triumph during the hairdressing industry’s longest running awards ceremony – a fitting ending to the duo’s epic five-month journey.

The emotional finale at the spectacular event was attended by more than 1,000 of the hairdressing industry’s most prolific and accomplished figureheads, including Richard Ward, Trevor Sorbie MBE and Charles Worthington MBE. The Westrow West Park team will now launch their new prestigious title into an exciting expedition of a ‘Year of Dreams’ – a prize created to push their own personal business and creative boundaries.

The Westrow West Park dream team was presented with the prestigious trophy in an unforgettable moment by charismatic celebrity presenter Rick Edwards of Channel 4 fame and Managing Director of L’Oreal Professionnel Products Division, Vincent Mercier.

The award-winning overall model look created by Matthew Sutcliffe and Lauren Elliott from Westrow West Park stood out amongst the 28 other competitors and captured the attention of the judging panel through their flawless merge of immaculate hair colour and beautiful finish, alongside editorially-inspired make-up and stunning catwalk-inspired styling. Each element worked perfectly together and reflected their awareness of key current fashion trends.

“I worked backstage at Ashish at this season’s London Fashion Week, which gave me a great insight into current trends in both fashion and hair,” said Matthew Sutcliffe on the night. “At Ashish it was all about luxurious, metallic materials with a lot of texture in the clothes. As the L’Oreal Colour Trophy is ‘Hair Inspired by Fashion’, we took inspiration from this, as well as the Gucci A/W12 show, fusing our favourite designers to create a fashion-forward style. When it came to the hair we wanted to work in harmony with the clothes. We used a seamless smudging technique for the colour, blending lilac into lavender at the end, using a mink-blonde tone throughout. Our look was classic, clean, fashion forward and luxurious – something we always strive for at Westow.

Speaking of their triumphant award win, Westrow co-director, Steve Rowbottom, said: “Winning at this year’s L’Oreal Colour Trophy was such an amazing accolade for the Westrow West Park team. They have channeled so much thought and creativity into perfecting and achieving a look that they felt truly embodied the ‘Hair inspired by Fashion’ brief as well as excelling in the disciplines inherent within the Westrow brand. We are proud that they have been able to fly the flag for Westrow during the brand’s 25th anniversary year at such a prestigious and respected industry event.”

Westrow West Park climbed their way to the top through a challenging three-stage process that began back in February 2012 when they entered their ‘Hair Inspired by Fashion’ model look – one of more than 900 photographic entries from across the country. Their stunning model image won them a place at the North Eastern regional final where they produced a live model look alongside 35 other entrants from the region, including six other Westrow teams. Their model took to the runway in front of a panel of acclaimed hairdressers, scooping them first place on the night and securing them a coveted place at the Grand Final – one of only 28 teams chosen from 455 salons to do so.

At the Grand Final it was a tense day of live hairdressing inside the L’Oréal Professionnel Academy, London as Westrow West Park recreated their model look in just 2 hours 30 minutes and waited as eight of the industry’s most acclaimed figures meticulously judged each of the models. This highly respected panel of judges included; Jason Miller, Jo Hansford MBE, Errol Douglas MBE, Andrew Barton, Richard Ward, Charles Worthington MBE, and David Lambert.

Westrow West Park will now enjoy a once in a lifetime prize of a ‘A Year of Dreams’, which consists of a bespoke calendar of opportunities created to ensure that the winners get the most from their successful year. An exciting mix of educational courses, national media exposure and glamorous fashion shoots all await. Westrow can’t wait!

Westrow Harrogate's Futuristic Facelift

WESTROW HARROGATE’S FUTURISTIC FACELIFT

Beauty’s most definitely on the inside as the Westrow Harrogate salon enjoys a £150,000 facelift

With a seven-strong salon group across Yorkshire, keeping one-step ahead of the trends has been pivotal to Westrow’s success. And with the recent and stunning transformation of its Harrogate salon, the brand is proving its dedication to style and service is second to none. Set in the salubrious position of Station Parade since 1999, the salon has always appealed to Harrogate’s discerning clientele, but its recent facelift has ensured that the salon – and the Westrow brand – can step into the future with even more style.

Taking inspiration from illusion and light, the design of the salon had to meet the exacting standards of Franchisee, Simone Spencer, with a bright and beautiful décor that is both modern and fresh.

Every item (barring the magazine stands) was crafted bespoke to the salon, courtesy of Stephen Neall interiors, the original shopfitters when the salon opened 12 years ago. With only a two-week window for transformation, time was tight, and the Harrogate team decamped to Westrow Wetherby to tend to the tresses of their clientele there, while the Stephen Neall transformation team set about working their magic – with stunning results.

A sensory journey, clients are greeted at the glass reception desk before being guided to the privacy of the luxurious backwash area. Separated from the salon with a frosted glass panel (which took ten men to install), remote-controlled lighting utilises a variation of relaxing colours to set the tone. A no-talking policy in this area also ensures a calm, serene environment, allowing clients to unwind before they head to their salon service and the buzz of the salon outside. Here, an abundance of mirrors add depth and enhance the space and open, relaxing feel of the salon.

The salon has incorporated the use of strip lighting down either side of the cutting positions, which offers clarity to both staff and clients.

“We wanted a sharp salon that not only looked good, but that worked on every level,” says Simone Spencer. “The materials we utilized, such as DuPont, Corian, Amtico and Slate, are the best on the market, while the lighting, which we sourced from Italy, ensures a perfect, even light. There are also small spotlights in the centre that gently diffuse soft lighting, which mean haircuts look sharper than ever. The feedback has been great and at night, when people drive past, it’s a beacon of light. Hopefully this design will form a blueprint for other Westrow salons, and work well against the company’s new vision and branding.”

Looks like the future really is set to be bright for Westrow.

Hair was left silky and glistening, with luminous sheer panels of contrasting tones, creating hidden depths of colour within bold, beautiful haircuts.

19 APRIL 2012 – Westrow’s Creative Director, Steve Rowbottom, and the Westrow Artistic Team, joined fashionable forces with ghd Education to host an up close and personal event recently. Held at the ghd Style Academy in Leeds, Westrow – renowned globally for its precision hairdressing and educational ability – worked on a selection of models throughout the evening seminar, which covered the fundamentals of classic hairdressing and offered more than 70 guests an insight into understanding hairdressing disciplines as well as a look at how to interpret catwalk trends and distill them into commercial gain.

“We have developed a new seminar programme which will educate stylists on the latest fashion trends and ghd techniques, while making current trends easy to reproduce and talk about in a salon environment,” said Jo Robertson, ghd UK and Ireland Education Manager. “The Up Close and Personal seminar developed by Steve Rowbottom and the Westrow Artistic Team is a key part of our new education plans and we look forward to further developing this collaboration in the future.”
“Our up close and personal seminar in collaboration with ghd Education was the perfect platform for us to showcase our technical abilities to a wider audience,” said Steve Rowbottom of the event. “Education is key to our strategy moving forward. Working with a forward-thinking brand delivering our own techniques and trends for the forthcoming season was the perfect opportunity for the Westrow Artistic Team to showcase their capabilities.”

WESTROW PAYS HOMAGE TO VIDAL SASSOON

WESTROW PAYS HOMAGE TO VIDAL SASSOON – THE PIONEER OF THE HAIRDRESSING INDUSTRY

It was announced on Wednesday 9th May, that Vidal Sassoon CBE passed away at the age of 84 following his battle with leukaemia.
An industry icon, he became the most celebrated hairdresser in the world after blazing a trail in the hairdressing industry with a fresh way of thinking – his unique aesthetic and geometric styling in the 1960s was revolutionary for women looking to free themselves from the constraints of the stiff, set styles of the previous decade.
Westrow’s co-director, Steve Rowbottom, began his career at Vidal Sassoon in 1981, working in the Leeds salon under the tutelage of then creative director, Tim Hartley.
“Those were heady days,” recalls Steve. “Working for such an iconic man and brand has hugely influenced my career and Westrow as a business, as everything we embody uses the principles inherent in Vidal Sassoon’s disciplines. He was a true master of his craft; attention to detail was everything, and his love of precision cutting is something that has never left me after 25 years in business and is at the heart of everything we strive for across the Westrow salon group. He always said ‘if they don’t look good, we don’t look good’ a true industry mantra, and his impeccable standards and creativity ensured he truly ignited British hairdressing. Without his input the industry would not have been what it is today, and he will be sorely missed.”
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial donations be sent to American Friends of The Hebrew University in support of The Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Anti-Semitism- 11500 W. Olympic Boulevard, Suite 512 LA CA 90064 or www.afhu.org.
A service will be planned at a later date.
