Made in Leeds- He's Got IT!

HE’S GOT IT!

Matthew Sutcliffe from Westrow’s 18 Thornton’s Arcade salon – one of seven stylish salons the brand has across Yorkshire – has been proving his worth in the haidressing industry this year with a whole host of accolades.

Earlier this year Matthew proved his ceative prowess by scooping the top spot, along with Lauren Elliott from Westrow West Park, at the prestigious 57th annual L’Oréal Colour Trophy Grand Final at the opulent Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.

The fabulous finale at the spectacular event was attended by more than 1,000 of the hairdressing industry’s most prolific and accomplished figureheads, where their award-winning model look captured the attention of the judging panel through their flawless merge of immaculate hair colour and beautiful finish, alongside editorially-inspired make-up and stunning catwalk-inspired styling. Each element worked in synergy and truly reflected their awareness of key current fashion trends.

Adding to his covetable trophy portfolio, Matthew also took the title of the IT Guy on Creative HEAD’s 2012 IT List – the national awards event for hairdressers aged 30 or under, sponsored by ghd. Hosted by comedian Seann Walsh at the breathtakingly beautiful Royal Courts of Justice in central London, Matthew took his trophy to a standing ovation by an audience of some of the biggest names in hairdressing and high fashion, the perfect addition to his 2012 L’Oreal Colour Trophy award.

Recognising and rewarding a male star in the making, Matthew has proven to be a white-hot name excelling in all aspects of his career and demonstrating unparalleled passion and skill. From rising through the salon ranks to being in demand backstage at a whole host of shoots and shows, as The IT Guy victor, Matthew has proven he’s a fashion force to be reckoned with and is destined for industry greatness.

Matthew’s presentation was described by one of the judges as: “An amazing presentation with great attention and screaming personality. Matthew’s approach to and execution of work is outstanding.”

Matthew is also finalised in the Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s FAME Team. The Fellowship Academy of Merit and Excellence (FAME) Team are selected annually to promote a new generation of bright young hairdressers. Nominated exclusively by Fellowship members, the potential team members undergo a rigorous selection process that starts with a nomination from a Member of The Fellowship and includes photographic work, a test of the candidates' ability to recreate their photographs under time pressure, a detailed CV, an in-depth interview, a haircut, a long hair assessment and a 2-minute live demonstration of their hairdressing skills onstage.

Westrow Scoops British Hairdressing Business Awards

Nice hair guys! - (L-R) Dan Lobb, Steve Rowbottom, Marc Westerman and Jayne Lewis-Orr

Westrow hairdressing, which has seven salons across Yorkshire, was celebrating again on Monday night after taking home the trophy in the Business Director of the Year and Franchisee of the Year categories at the national 2012 British Hairdressing Business Awards.

Held at the Lancaster London Hotel, London on Monday 17 September 2012, presented by Hairdressers Journal International and hosted by leading media personality, Dan Lobb, the national British Hairdressing Business Awards are now in their fourteenth year and are designed to specifically recognise and celebrate excellence and exceptional business practice within the hairdressing industry.

Laura Procter from Westrow West Park took home the trophy for Franchisee of the Year at the event, while the ultimate accolade of the night and most prestigious business award in the hairdressing industry - Business Director of the Year - went to Westrow directors Steve Rowbottom and Marc Westerman for their forward-thinking, entrepreneurial expertise and skill.

The event, which has sixteen categories, recognises and rewards the commercial insight and foresight of the leading hairdressers and business talent throughout the UK. To enter, salons or individuals have to fulfil the set criteria, which must be presented in a dossier. This is initially judged by a team of industry experts along with the sponsors of each category. From these impartial judging sessions, finalists are chosen and the dossiers judged by an independent panel of judges, including industry experts, business journalists and financial specialists.

For Business Director of the Year, Marc Westerman and Steve Rowbottom were required to submit an entry that proved their forward-thinking business strategy and prowess, roles, achievements, motivational and entrepreneurial skills and industry passions, backed up with statistics and an interview with a panel of industry experts.

For Franchisee of the Year Laura Procter was required to submit a dossier highlighting Westrow West Park's turnover, marketing and brand activity, training, career opportunities and business aims and long-term objectives.

Marc Westerman and Steve Rowbottom were shortlisted against six other UK salons in the Business Director of the Year category while Laura Procter was shortlisted against three other UK salons in the Franchisee of the Year category, with the trio selected by judges as the best in the business, demonstrating exemplary business acumen and skill.

Steve Rowbottom, Westrow director said: "Winning this award is a great personal and professional accolade for us. We have always strived to set ourselves apart from our competitors with our values and beliefs - everything is about planning for today, which in turn allows us to plan for tomorrow.

"We are proactive and reactive and understand about the perception of the business and how business is perceived and received and ultimately we have never diversified from our original thought process 25 years ago, which is quality over quantity every time."

Marc Westerman said: "This year, which is our 25th year in business, has been an incredible one for Westrow. To win both the Franchisee of the Year and Business Director of the Year awards is a wonderful feeling, and is the perfect launch pad for our Westrow Academy, a centre of educational excellence, which is set to open in the heart of Leeds in 2013."

Publishing Director of Hairdressers Journal International, Jayne Lewis-Orr, commented: "Entries were alive with innovation, enthusiasm and entrepreneurial expertise showing amazing skills across the breadth of business management. The judges had an extremely difficult job as standards were so high and for Westrow to be chosen as winner of two categories at the British Hairdressing Business Awards is a tremendous testimony to their skills and business acumen."

Olympic Dreams Do Come True

WESTROW WELCOMES PARALYMPIAN CLAIRE CASHMORE TO ITS LEEDS SALON FOR SOME MEDAL BEHAVIOUR
Westrow hairdressing, which has seven salons across Yorkshire, welcomed Paralympics champion, Claire Cashmore, to its Leeds city centre salon on Thursday 13 September 2012, for some post-event pampering from stylist Matthew Kitching.

Super swimmer and triple medallist at the 2012 London games, Claire visited Westrow 4-6 Thornton’s Arcade straight from the homecoming celebration held in Millenium Square in Leeds, where more than 300 well-wishers lined the streets to welcome her and fellow Yorkshire Paralympians – Hannah Cockroft, Ali Jawad and David Stone – home.

Claire, who competed in six different events in her third Paralympic games, was a triple medal winner at London 2012, scooping two silver medals in the women’s SB8 100m breaststroke and 4x100m medley relay team and a bronze in the women’s 4 x 100m freestyle relay, bringing her medley of medals into the salon for all to see.

Westrow Director, Marc Westerman (pictured with Claire above), said: “It was great to welcome Claire to Westrow yesterday after her triumph at London 2012. We had been cheering her on throughout the games, so invited her to enjoy some post-Paralympics pampering at our city centre salon along with a goody bag of products from Kerastase. It was an honour to meet her and everyone at Westrow looks forward to charting her progress in Rio in 2016.”

Simply the Best!

Marc and Steve receive their award.

Monday 17 September saw the best in the hairdressing industry rewarded for their professional expertise at HJ's 2012 British Hairdressing Business Awards at the Lancaster Hotel, London.
The ultimate accolade of Business Director of the Year went to an ecstatic Steve Rowbottom and Marc Westerman from Westrow, Leeds. The announcement of their win was met by a resounding response from guests gathered at the Lancaster London hotel.
Said Jayne Lewis-Orr, publishing director of HJ: "Once again the British Hairdressing Business Awards proved a fitting tribute to those who contribute exceptional business acumen and drive to the hairdressing industry.
While the creativity within hairdressing should never be underestimated, the success of any salon or salon group also relies on those with commercial insight and foresight, and the HJ British Hairdressing Business Awards is all about honouring these individuals and teams."
Earlier in the evening Laura Proctor from Westrow Westpark picked up The Franchisee of the Year Award sponsored by Hairdressers Journal to complete an amazing treble of awards during 2012.
